Among many solo travelers and non-solo travelers, the question on how to manage heavy luggage comes up all the time. If you’re traveling in Japan, you’re in luck because Japan’s logistics services is arguably the most convenient in the world that allows you travel hands-free!
Luggage Delivery Services at Narita Airport
From our experience, the best way to deal with heavy luggage or travel hands-free is to use a luggage delivery service. In Japanese, they are called “takuhaibin”.
Airports and many hotels will have baggage delivery services that you can arrange to deliver to your next destination be it a hotel or a residential address.
If you just arrived by plane, you can locate these services at the first floor of Narita airport. Yamato (Kuro Neko Yamato) is located on the 1st floor of the Arrival Lobby . You can find them at the very end of both wings. If you are not able to find them ask any of the Information counters they have all over at Narita Airport. Here is a picture of the baggage delivery services below at one of the wings at the first floor of Narita airport.

If you are already in your hotel and plan to move to a different hotel, simply ask your front desk about delivering your luggage and they will help you. All you have to do is fill in a form they give you with the address of where you want your luggage to be delivered to pay the fee.
How Long does it Take to Deliver Luggage?
Believe it or not, Japan’s baggage delivery companies are able to make most deliveries on the same day. Furthermore, the latest it will take would 1 to 2 days. There will be factors to take in mind i.e. the time of day, the destination, traffic and the weather. In most cases, you can get your luggage sent to your hotel on the same day, while taking advantage of travelling freely. If there will be a delay, the delivery staff can help and give you an approximation of delivery times.
How much does delivery cost?
The estimated costs to deliver your luggage will depend on the size. As of 2023, a small handbag weighing about 2 kgs (4 pounds) will cost 1,500 yen, while a heavy big box weighing up to 30 kgs (66 pounds) can cost around 5,000 yen.
For most standard size luggage, expect the cost to be around 2500 yen to 3500 yen.
